Vehicle Overview

The Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD and 3500HD are the largest trucks sold by the automaker, and slot in above the Silverado and compact Colorado in the truck lineup.

The 2015 Chevrolet Silverado HD is available in rear- or four-wheel drive, with two engines, a six-speed automatic, and in three cab styles. The standard 6.0-liter V-8 makes 360 hp and 380 lb-ft of torque, and can be had as a dual-fuel engine, which runs on gasoline and compressed natural gas (CNG). The dual-fuel engine makes 301 hp and 333 lb-ft of torque, but as the tank takes up one-third of the bed we think it loses some of the versatility associated with a truck. The optional 6.6-liter turbodiesel V-8 delivers just 397 hp but cranks out 765 lb-ft of torque, and while the EPA doesn’t officially report fuel economy numbers, we observed 21 mpg without a load.

The Silverado HD lineup gains a High County trim level, bringing the luxury introduced on the Silverado 1500 to the hard-working HD lineup. Maximum payload (on a 3500) is 7,374 pounds, maximum conventional trailer towing is 19,600 pounds, and maximum fifth-wheel towing is 23,200 pounds.

While the Silverado 3500 has not been rated, the 2015 Chevrolet Silverado 2500 has been evaluated by the NHTSA: The crew cab models received four-star overall ratings, while the Extra and Regular cab models received three-star overall ratings (out of a possible five stars).

What We Think

John Schwegman, executive director of product and pricing for General Motors’ said it best: “We’re kind of running out of large stumps to pull out of the ground.” The latest heavy-duty Silverado was the subject of his comment, and with 765 lb-ft of torque on tap, he’s got a point. The latest Silverado is a progression of the truck that’s helped get them to where they are today, but it doesn’t change the game. A new High Country adds players to the luxury truck game, and a CNG model will fill the needs of a few fleet operators. The one complaint we have about the CNG/gas powered truck is the compromised bed space, as the large CNG tank takes up almost one-third of the bed.

We wouldn't call the Silverado 2500 a leader in style or feature innovation, but like a lot of our friends, it gets up for work every day, always looking forward to the weekend.
