What's New for Camry in 2014

Midway through the 2014 model year, the Toyota Camry received a refresh (called the 2014.5), which now includes a standard rearview camera on all trims, the latest Entune infotainment system, and Parisian Night Pearl replaces Clearwater Blue as an exterior color option on the LE, XLE gas, and XLE Hybrid models...

Vehicle Overview

The Toyota Camry is the automaker’s midsize family sedan that slots in above the Corolla and below the Avalon in the lineup. It’s long been the family sedan to beat, and remains one of the best-selling midsize sedans in the U.S.

Summary

The 2014 Toyota Camry comes standard with a 2.5-liter I-4 that makes 178 hp and 170 lb-ft of torque (or 173 hp, 165 lb-ft in PZEV form), gets an EPA-estimated 25/35 mpg city/highway. All non-hybrid trims get the six-speed automatic (the hybrid gets a CVT) that powers the front wheels. The optional engine is a 3.5-liter V-6 that makes 268 hp and 248 lb-ft of torque, while getting 21/30 mpg.

The 2014 Camry Hybrid combines the 2.5-liter I-4 with a small electric motor for a combined 200 hp that powers the front wheels through a CVT, a combination good for EPA estimates of 43/39 mpg on the LE and 40/38 mpg on the XLE.

The 2014 Toyota Camry received a five-star overall safety rating from the NHTSA, and is considered an IIHS Top Safety Pick.

What We Think

In a 2013 comparison of eight midsize sedans, a 2012 Toyota Camry was matched up with a 2013 Honda Accord, but lost to the Accord. “Beyond the laudable virtues of everyday utility, the 2012 Toyota Camry LE can't keep pace with the other cars in our test.” “It might be the best-selling sedan in the country . . . but the Camry just doesn't look that way,” we said, “even though this basic Camry LE test car's dash layout represents an effort to embrace the era of touchscreens and voice recognition, the buttons and knobs that remain look clunky and dated, though usable.” In our testing one editor remarked, “The engine and transmission work with remarkable harmony, and this sets the car apart.” The handling was also praised, as we said it had an “overall feeling of competence.”
