What's New for Legacy in 2014

The 2014 Subaru Legacy sees only minor changes. Subaru's EyeSight system is now available on 2.5i Premium models, and a rearview camera is now included with the power moonroof package on Premium and Limited models. The base model (the 2.5i) gets a new alloy-wheel package that includes foglamps and seventeen-inch all-season tires over aluminum wheels. The 2014 Subaru Legacy Sport now offers navigation. Vehicle Summary

The Subaru Legacy received a pleasant update last year. Fuel economy is up to 32 mpg on the highway, thanks to a revised continuously variable transmission and a slightly more efficient engine. The 3.6R model remains for those who favor acceleration over fuel savings. All Legacy sedans now feature a brake-override safety system. Subaru's optional camera-based EyeSight driver-assistance system adds precollision braking, pedestrian detection, lane-departure warning, and adaptive cruise control. Subaru has stiffened the Legacy's chassis and suspension, which Subaru claims reduces body roll by 40 percent. Standard audio systems now feature Bluetooth connectivity and audio streaming in addition to iPod controls and a USB port; the optional navigation system now includes a 7.0-inch touchscreen, voice control, a rearview camera, SiriusXM NavTraffic, and premium speakers. Limited models now feature a rear-seat air duct to help regulate cabin temperature.

Overview

All-wheel drive is a rarity in the mid-size-sedan segment, but it's a staple in Subaru's portfolio. Subaru traditionally had a difficult time selling the Legacy outside of the northern corners of the country (plus the entire state of Colorado) because all-wheel-drive systems used to carry such a big penalty in fuel economy. Now that the 2014 Subaru Legacy returns an EPA-rated 32 mpg on the highway, it appeals to car shoppers all over the country. Unfortunately, that fuel-economy figure is possible only with the CVT. We much prefer the manual transmission because it gives us control over the engine speed, but that control means losing 3 mpg.

Subaru had fallen behind in the technology race, but the EyeSight system includes the driver-assistance features we used to see only in pricey luxury cars. Fortunately, it's possible to order a Legacy with EyeSight but without Subaru's poor navigation system. Without navigation, the Legacy's interior is intuitive and comfortable. Like all Subarus, the Legacy is more function than fashion, but this interior should stand the test of time much better than competitors' that rely too much on touchscreens to handle all of the stereo and climate-control needs.

Overall, the 2014 Subaru Legacy competes well with better-known mid-size sedans such as the Honda Accord, the Volkswagen Passat, and the Toyota Camry. It's worth a test drive, especially if all-wheel drive is on your wish list.
