Vehicle Overview

The 2014 ProMaster is a full-size commercial vehicle from Ram and slots above the compact Cargo Van. It is sold in cargo and window van configurations with a low or high roof in 1500, 2500, or 3500 models.

The 2014 ProMaster is powered by a 3.6-liter V-6 making 280 hp and 260 lb-ft of torque or a 3.0-liter turbodiesel I-4 producing 174 hp and 295 lb-ft. Both engines are paired to a six-speed automatic transmission while a new single-clutch automated manual is optional with the I-4. All 2014 ProMasters are available only in front-drive configuration, a choice of 118-, 136-, or 159-inch wheelbases, four body lengths up to 250 inches, and a maximum towing capacity of 5100 pounds.

A highly flexible and usable interior is one of the 2014 ProMaster’s strengths, sporting a utilitarian cabin that emphasizes functionality with up to 12 tie-down rings and five sidewall tie-downs to hold down cargo to the floor and between 230 to 530 cubic feet of cargo volume. Comfort and material quality inside the van’s passenger compartment are unimpressive and does not have a good driving position.

The 2014 Ram ProMaster has not been crash-tested by the NHTSA or the IIHS.

What We Think

The 2014 ProMaster is a good choice among full-size commercial vehicles with its available diesel engine, and multiple body styles and sizes. We said in a 2013 Driven review that it had a “smooth carlike ride and lacked body roll due to the low center of gravity,” making it easier to drive than its competition. Furthermore, we also noted that the ProMaster’s low repair costs, multiple versions, and flexible cabin make it attractive for commercial vehicle fleets. Space for the driver and passenger is not well-designed due to the seating position that forces occupants to sit high with their “knees almost against the windshield.”
