Vehicle Overview

The 2014 Nissan Armada is a full-size SUV sold in SV, SL, and Platinum grades, and with rear- or four-wheel drive.

The Nissan Armada is offered with exclusively with a 5.6-liter V-8 producing 317 hp and 385 lb-ft of torque routed through a five speed automatic transmission in rear- or four-wheel-drive configurations and a maximum towing capacity of 9000 pounds. On the road the Armada drives smoothly but its truck-based roots are apparent with a less refined ride than car-based crossovers; however, this allows it to perform better off-road. Fuel economy is a weak point for the SUV with an EPA rating of 13/19 mpg city/highway for rear-drive models and 12/18 mpg with four-wheel drive.

Inside the cabin is where the 2014 Armada shows its age because of the inferior build quality when compared to its competition. Materials used in the cabin, while decently finished, “felt flimsy and cost-cut side.” Space inside the SUV is generous with available seating for seven to eight passengers depending on whether the second row is fitted with captain’s chairs. Comfort remains a 2014 Armada strong point, making it an excellent choice for hauling groups of people and for long drives. Additionally, available features such as rear seat entertainment, navigation, and an 11-speaker Bose audio system make the interior feel more upscale than it actually is. The 2014 Nissan Armada has not been crash-tested by the IIHS or the NHTSA.

What We Think

While the Armada remains a viable choice in the full-size SUV segment, it's showing is age with its lackluster fuel economy, and low-quality interior. In a 2012 review, we noted that its truck-like feel make it less luxurious due to its unrefined ride compared to car-based crossovers. Furthermore, a 2009 review points out that the use of low quality interior plastics detract from the SUV’s overall quality and “reminding one of the cost cutting days at Nissan.”
