The 2014 Nissan Altima is a midsize family sedan slotting above the compact Sentra and below the full-size Maxima in Nissan’s lineup. Four-cylinder models are sold in 2.5, 2.5S, 2.5SV, and 2.5SV trims while V-6 variants are available in 3.5S, 3.5SV and 3.5SL grades.
The 2014 Nissan Altima is available with a 2.5-liter I-4 making 182 hp and 180 lb-ft of torque or a 3.5-liter V-6 producing 270 hp and 251 lb-ft. Both engines are paired to a continuously variable transmission (CVT) and are available only with front-wheel drive. V-6 Altimas have lively acceleration with generous torque at lower revs that make maneuvers effortless during highway cruising. Four-cylinder models provide adequate power for the daily commute but “can be a bit buzzy” since it tends to stay at higher revs during hard acceleration. The Altima’s CVT is smooth, well-tuned and responsive, improving its drivability particularly in the V-6 where it “rarely needs to rev at higher speeds for extended periods of time.” Among midsize sedans, the Altima is one of the leaders in terms of fuel economy with the EPA rating I-4 models at 27/38 mpg city/highway and 22/31 mpg when equipped with the V-6. Handling, while not at sport sedan levels, is a 2014 Altima strong suit with a capable chassis that doesn’t sacrifice ride quality or comfort for the sake of agility.
Interior comfort and refinement in the 2014 Altima is praiseworthy with the use of high quality materials inside the cabin, making it feel upscale. Nissan’s “zero gravity” seats provide excellent support and “cosset you in the same way a comfy chair does.” The car’s generous space for four adults and large trunk makes it ideal for families and people seeking a comfortable car that achieves impressive fuel economy.
The 2014 Nissan Altima has a five-star safety rating from the NHTSA (out of a possible five stars) and received a good score in four categories of IIHS testing, with an acceptable score in the small overlap test (good is the highest possible score).
What We Think
The 2014 Nissan Altima is a competitive midsize family sedan with a host of available tech features, a comfortable cabin, and a smooth ride. In two reviews of a 2013 model, we noted the smoothness and responsiveness of the V-6 and CVT, making the Altima “impressively quick” and “delivers a lot of torque down low.” However, the I-4 doesn’t have the same level of refinement as the V-6. Additionally, during a Four Seasons Test, we praised the car’s refinement, stating that the Altima is for “buyer who prioritizes comfort above all else.” Exterior styling is where the Altima falls behind its competitors due to its evolutionary styling, which remains conservative and anonymous. In one review, we said that Nissan followed in the Toyota Camry’s footsteps “with generation after generation of boring styling,” causing it to miss “an opportunity to truly gun for the number one spot.”
