Vehicle Overview

The Land Rover Range Rover Evoque is a compact crossover that comes in two- and four-door variants. The Range Rover Evoque fits below the LR2 as the smallest vehicle, but above it in terms of price and luxury.

For 2014 Land Rover has continued to offer the turbocharged 240-hp 2.0-liter I-4 on the Range Rover Evoque, but has upgraded the transmission to a nine-speed automatic over the previous six-speed. Torque remains a capable 250 lb-ft, but EPA estimates rise to 21/30 mpg city/highway, several mpg more over the previous six-speed equipped models. All-wheel drive remains standard, and now the system can now decouple the rear axle for greater efficiency, but takes just 300 milliseconds to reactivate when greater traction is needed.

Notable features on the 2014 Range Rover Evoque include adaptive cruise control (with intelligent emergency braking), parking assist (including parking exit, which helps drivers leave parking spots), closing vehicle sensors (for overtaking vehicles), and active driveline with active differentials, active torque biasing and torque vectoring, and Land Rover’s Terrain Response system. The Evoque is still offered as a two-door variant, but fewer than 10 percent of buyers have opted for it.

The 2014 Range Rover Evoque has not been evaluated by the NHTSA or the IIHS.

What We Think

We were skeptical when we first saw Land Rover’s Range Rover Evoque, and with good reason. Why take a perfectly good utility vehicle and compromise it for the sake of style? We answered that after living with it for a year, saying, “Although the Evoque proved more practical and more comfortable than most of the swoopy crossovers that have come before, it still doesn’t add up to a purely sensible choice. And yet, that’s precisely the point. Here at last is a crossover that we love for all the silly, emotional reasons we love cars in general. Because we love looking at it. Because we love driving it. Because in a sea of sensible sameness, it’s different. That’s why.” In an Around the Block review of the updated 2014 Evoque we noted, of the biggest change, “we found that the six-speed gearbox [of the 2012 Evoque] could sometimes throw a wet blanket on throttle response, thanks to its eagerness to get into a higher gear and its reluctance to drop down a cog or two even when the engine lugged. With a wider spread of ratios and more cogs to choose from, the new nine-speed is much better able to keep the engine in its lively zone so turbo lag is not an issue.” The new transmission has improved what was already a great crossover.
