The Gallardo is Lamborghini's least expensive offering, but don't call it a bargain. It is an Italian supercar that costs about a quarter of a million dollars and has a V-10 engine. Plenty of buyers haven't been deterred by the steep price of the Gallardo, which is the best-selling model in the brand's history. After a decade on the market, though, the Gallardo has gotten a bit stale, and the automaker plans to replace it in the very near future. The all-new model is supposedly longer, wider, and lighter than the Gallardo, and it will be called Cabrera. We expect a 5.2-liter V-10 engine with about 600 hp, as well as seven-speed dual-clutch automatic and six-speed manual transmission options. Look for the car to go on sale sometime in late 2014.
The Gallardo is old but aging better than Harrison Ford. Visually, the Gallardo is restrained (for a two-seat Italian exotic), with no outlandish bodywork that puts flash ahead of drivability. After a recent redesign for front- and rear-end styling, the LP560-4 models look a little more outrageous. The Gallardo is definitely not a conveyance for people looking to travel undercover.
The Gallardo replaces Lamborghini's previous visual lack of restraint with a pure addiction to speed: the Gallardo is available with 550, 560, or 570 metric horsepower, all enough to propel the rear- or all-wheel-drive supercar to 60 mph in less than four seconds. Stand on the gas pedal long enough and the Gallardo's speedometer will crest at close to 200 mph. It has a manual or an automated manual transmission and comes in coupe, convertible, and super-lightweight body styles. The Gallardo's 5.2-liter V-10 may be less refined than some of its competitors' engines, but it makes a great noise to match the car's great looks. The all-wheel-drive system in the LP560-4 and the LP570-4 helps keep the fun from getting too dangerous.
For 2015 Lamborghini will likely replace the Gallardo with the Cabrera, which should be longer, wider, lighter, and more powerful than the Gallardo. It will have a V-10 engine and two transmission options and will be built using a lot of aluminum and carbon fiber. It should go on sale sometime in late 2014.
After a decade on the market, it's time for the Gallardo to be replaced. It's just hard to imagine anything being more successful than the little Lambo.
