What's New for Grand Cherokee in 2014

The 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee is significantly upgraded. Perhaps the biggest news for the brand faithful is that the 2014 Grand Cherokee is available with a 3.0-liter turbo-diesel V-6. All 2014 Grand Cherokees make use of a new eight-speed automatic transmission and a refreshed front fascia. Shoppers looking for the top-of-the-line 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee will want the new Summit model, which is the most luxurious Grand Cherokee ever built...more

Vehicle Summary

The Jeep Grand Cherokee is arguably the most important vehicle in the Jeep portfolio. Although the Wrangler is the most iconic Jeep, the Grand Cherokee brought the brand to the suburbs in earnest in the 1990s, following the lead of the departed Grand Wagoneer. With almost all the off-road capability of the fabled Wrangler, plus the accommodations of a luxury car, the Grand Cherokee has dramatically expanded the appeal of its brand since the model's introduction in 1992. From a mere three choices for the inaugural 1993 model year to today's six distinct model lines, the Grand Cherokee has evolved to meet the needs of a new generation of owners. Today's 470-hp Grand Cherokee SRT may be a long way from the humble 190-hp in-line six-cylinder that powered the original Grand Cherokee, but the model has never strayed from its mission to be a true SUV capable of going off-road and pulling trailers.

Overview

Although it may seem outrageous at first, the breadth of the 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee model line means that it competes with everything from the Toyota Highlander to the BMW X5 M. The base 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo is powered by the venerable 3.6-liter Pentastar V-6, which produces 290 hp. Stepping up to the Limited trim level allows for the optional 5.7-liter Hemi V-8 or the frugal 3.0-liter EcoDiesel V-6.

Although the 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee can be optioned for fairly severe off-road duty, the on-road ride quality isn't compromised in the least. Quadra-lift air suspension, available only with diesel and V-8 powertrains, takes that mission even further, improving on-road handling while also increasing ride height during trail excursions. With the Grand Cherokee, you can pretty much tackle anything from fitting in at the country-club parking lot to reaching the most remote trout stream without changing vehicles.

Jeep offers one of our favorite infotainment systems in the Grand Cherokee with Uconnect. The available 8.4-inch touchscreen system controls everything from navigation to stereo to climate-control functions, but there are still redundant physical controls for volume, tuning, and climate control. Jeep also offers almost every conceivable luxury touch and electronic gadget inside the cabin of the 2014 Grand Cherokee.

The Grand Cherokee SRT continues to pose a threat to the Porsche Cayenne and BMW X5 M for a whole lot less money. Partially due to the new eight-speed automatic transmission, SRT models now can tow the same 7400 pounds as other V-8 Grand Cherokees. Standard launch control allows the big SUV to embarrass some sports cars off the line.
