Vehicle Summary

In the midst of the SUV/crossover craze of the early 2000s, Infiniti introduced the FX, a model that was completely different from any SUV we'd seen before. Based on the same platform as the Nissan Z sports car, the 2003 FX was available in rear- or all-wheel-drive and featured a 3.5-liter V-6 in the FX35 and a 4.5-liter V-8 in the FX45. The FX was sporty, fast, and stylish, but it gave up a considerable amount of practicality. Still, it was unique and sold relatively well in the United States. The second-generation FX was introduced in 2008 and featured similarly unconventional styling. The 3.5-liter V-6 was carried over, but a new FX50 model was equipped with a 390-hp, 5.6-liter V-8. In 2012, the base model got a 3.7-liter V-6 and became the FX37. For the 2014 model year, the FX becomes the QX70 to fit with the Infiniti lineup's new nomenclature.


The 2014 Infiniti QX70 gives off a strong first impression with its exterior styling, which Infiniti says is inspired by a bionic cheetah (whatever that means). The QX70 is not a typical SUV, but if you want to carve apexes and look good doing so, it might just be the SUV you're looking for. The 325-hp, 3.7-liter V-6 and 390-hp, 5.6-liter V-8 engines are highly capable and plenty powerful. Both are paired with a seven-speed automatic with shift paddles. The QX70 handles like a sport sedan with a low center of gravity, and there is an optional sport package that stiffens the ride considerably, which can be good or bad depending on your driving purpose.

The luxurious interior is very well put together and uses quality materials -- we especially love the optional quilted leather seats. The infotainment technology may be a tad dated compared with more recently redesigned rivals but is fairly simple to operate, and overall ergonomics are good. Don't expect the 2014 Infiniti QX70 to hold a lot of stuff, though; rear-seat room is adequate, but the steeply-sloped rear hatch invades into cargo space.

We are fans of the 2014 Infiniti QX70 because it is more like a sport sedan on stilts than a true crossover. Be aware, though, that practicality plays second fiddle to sportiness.
