The 2014 Infiniti Q60 is the new nameplate for the coupe and convertible versions of Infiniti's bread-and-butter G model. Although the G sedan (now called the Q50) is redesigned for 2014, the coupe and convertible G will carry over as the Q60. The original G35 debuted in 2003 in coupe and sedan body styles, and when the G was redesigned for 2007, the coupe got a larger, 3.7-liter V-6 (becoming G37) to further differentiate it from the sedan. The sedan gained this larger engine and also became the G37 in 2009, and a hardtop G37 convertible was introduced the same year. For 2011, Infiniti introduced a new IPL performance model for the coupe and the convertible. The IPL had upgraded suspension tuning and a few exterior detail changes, along with an increase of 18 hp and 6 lb-ft of torque.
The 2014 Infiniti Q60 is more of a sports car than you might think. Ostensibly a more luxurious version of the somewhat harsh Nissan 370Z (with which it shares a platform), the Q60 sacrifices some luxury and refinement for cornering and acceleration. A BMW 3 Series is more well rounded, but the Infiniti offers impressive performance from its 330-hp, 3.7-liter V-6 -- and it costs way less than its German competitors.
Although the 2014 Infiniti Q60 convertible is heavier due to the weight of the hard top's folding mechanism, it is similarly sporty to drive. Compared with other luxury convertibles, the Infiniti has a relatively rigid structure, and it shares the same attractive styling (inside and out) as the coupe. The main downside of the convertible is the laughably small trunk area that is left once the hardtop is stowed.
We drove the 2014 Infiniti Q60 IPL model, with 18 extra horsepower and suspension tuning changes, and found the upgrades to be underwhelming. Think of it as more of a subtle performance package than a performance model like BMW's M or Mercedes-Benz's AMG divisions offer. It might be best to stick with the regular sport package, as the IPL upgrades do not offer enough of a performance advantage to justify the price premium.
