Vehicle Summary

As Infiniti debuts its new Q/QX naming strategy, Q50 is the name you should remember. That's because the 2014 Infiniti Q50 is the replacement for the G37 sedan, which has been Infiniti's most popular model for several years. The G started off as an entry-level, front-wheel-drive sedan in the early '90s based on the staid Nissan Primera, but everything changed in 2003 when Infiniti introduced the G35 to much fanfare among the press. One of the first legitimate Japanese competitors to BMW's vaunted 3 Series, the G35 was a rear-wheel-drive sport sedan (or coupe). Its VQ V-6 engine had more power than the top-of-the-line BMW 330i but started at about the same price as the base-model BMW 325i. The G was redesigned in 2007, and a hardtop convertible model was introduced in 2009. For 2014, the Q50 sedan debuts as an all-new model (the coupe and convertible versions continue on from the previous generation as the Q60). Infiniti will continue to sell the outgoing G37 sedan in dealerships until the end of 2013.

Overview

The 2014 Infiniti Q50 plays in the fiercely competitive entry-level sport sedan segment with the venerable BMW 3 Series and the recently updated Cadillac ATS and Lexus IS. Our initial impressions are that the new Q50 is in the mix with these cars in terms of driving dynamics, with a sporty character and good power from the 328-hp, 3.7-liter V-6. There will also be a Q50 Hybrid for 2014 with an estimated net power rating of 354 hp. A seven-speed automatic comes standard on all Q50s; the manual transmission is gone for 2014.

A dizzying suite of safety technologies -- including lane guidance, adaptive cruise control, and predictive emergency braking -- is available on the 2014 Infiniti Q50 and, on the highway at least, the car can sometimes feel like it's driving itself. Whether these features enhance your driving experience will depend, as some drivers feel that these aggressive technologies make the car feel artificial and others appreciate the convenience. On the inside, the 2014 Infiniti Q50 will offer a host of infotainment technologies through Infiniti's new InTouch system, which uses two touchscreens. The overall design of the interior, though, looks similar to that of the G37, which is a good thing considering the previous-generation car's nice materials and simple ergonomics.

The 2014 Infiniti Q50's all-electric steering system is the first appearance of this technology in a passenger car, but a typical power rack-and-pinion steering setup will be standard for those wary of the non-hydraulic setup. One of our complaints about the G37 was the unrefined sound of the engine, and for 2014 the engine feels and sounds more refined thanks to a revised intake and exhaust as well as revised noise insulation. A turbocharged four-cylinder engine will join the V-6 and hybrid models in the near future thanks to a new partnership with Mercedes-Benz.
