Honda's long-running pickup, the Ridgeline, returns with minimal changes for 2014. A replacement is expected sooner rather than later, but for now the Ridgeline soldiers on mostly unchanged. The Ridgeline offers some of the function and capability of a traditional full-size truck yet also rides with the comfort and ease of a crossover. It attempts to be the best of both worlds, but results have been mixed, likely due to its slanted-bed styling and stubby dimensions. It can tow, and it has room for some stuff, just not tons of either. Overview

The 2014 Honda Ridgeline lets you own a pickup but drive a unibodied crossover. In many ways, the Ridgeline is more pleasant to drive and easier to live with than a full-size pickup. Because it's shorter has a smaller turning circle, so it's far easier to park and maneuver. It also doesn't require the driver to climb up so high to get into the cabin. It runs a 250-hp, 247 lb-ft V-6 engine mated to a five-speed automatic transmission, and all-wheel drive is standard. There's no torque steer, and the ride is agreeable for driver and passengers. The V-6 isn't potent by any stretch, but the Ridgeline is fine for around-town cruising. While this truck doesn't try to compete with the bruising full-sized trucks from Detroit, Honda's offering is up to the task for most recreational towing chores. The maximum tow rating is 5000 pounds and it has a half-ton payload rating.

The 2014 Honda Ridgeline's cabin is pleasant but doesn't break any new ground. It's a comfortable environment when bouncing over broken roads -- thanks to the chassis -- but the materials and interfaces are mediocre. There are plenty of storage spaces, however, and even the rear seat cushion flips up if you need to stuff something larger in back. The two-way tailgate flips down or pivots sideways, and there is a handy locking trunk in the bed for keeping valuables dry and safe.
