The Honda Accord is one of the best-selling, most popular cars in America. It appeals to a range of customers and is available at a wide variety of price points, offering everything from a powerful V-6 engine to a fuel-sipping hybrid. It can be loaded up to near luxury levels or as a more modest base model and comes in coupe and sedan versions. The 2014 Honda Accord is not one of the most exciting cars in the market, but it excels in many user-friendliness, utility, and value for the money, which is why we named it an Automobile Magazine All-Star for 2013.
The 2014 Honda Accord offers choices, which is one of its most appealing qualities. The base 2.4-liter in-line four-cylinder engine produces 185 hp and 181 lb-ft of torque, while the top-end V-6 makes 278 hp and 252 lb-ft. There are three transmissions available depending on the model: a six-speed manual, a six-speed automatic, and a CVT. Honda already sells a plug-in Accord hybrid, and this year it is adding a second (non-plugin) hybrid variant to the portfolio.
The Accord has always scored well in our All-Stars balloting, but the V-6 coupe with the manual appeals to us as enthusiasts. We were particularly taken with it during a test drive from the factory in Ohio where the Accord is assembled. One of our editors summed things up: "The 2014 Honda Accord is, in general, very good to drive -- hence its well-earned 2013 All-Star award -- but a V-6 manual coupe is on another level. I know it's front-wheel drive, but the soul of the NSX is in there, I tell you. If you've got 500 miles to dispatch in a single shot, this is a fine way to do it."
Honda also upgraded the Accord's interior, adding richer materials, a streamlined center stack, and more comfortable seats. There is an optional navigation system, adaptive cruise control, and forward collision-warning systems. A new feature, called LaneWatch, uses a camera to enhance the driver's visibility on the right-side blind-spot. The Accord also gets a new strut-type suspension setup in front, which noticeably improves the ride character compared with the previous generation.
