The 2014 Yukon and Yukon XL is a full-size truck-based SUV sold in SLE, SLT, and Denali grades and rear- or four-wheel-drive configurations.
The 2014 Yukon is available with three engines two 5.3-liter V-8s producing 320 hp and 326 lb-ft of torque and a 6.2-liter V-8 making 403 hp and 417 lb-ft paired to a six-speed automatic transmission. Fuel economy is average for its size at an EPA-rated 15/21 mpg city/highway with the 5.3-liter and 13/18 mpg with the 6.2-liter. All engines are also FlexFuel ready, meaning they can run on E85.
Interior space is generous with 45.8 cubic feet behind the third row and 137.4 with all seats folded down. Passenger space is ample for up to nine passengers, making it ideal for large families. In Denali trim, the Yukon and Yukon XL offers more convenience features such as heated and cooled seats, heated steering wheel, and tri-zone automatic climate control and a power lift gate.
The 2014 GMC Yukon and Yukon XL have a four-star safety rating from the NHTSA (out of a possible five stars) and has not been tested by the IIHS.
What We Think
While we have not tested a 2014 GMC Yukon, we did review the Chevrolet Tahoe, which is mechanically similar to the Yukon but offers less luxury and convenience features. In a 2013 Editor’s Notebook review we said that GM’s full-size SUV’s had a slow steering and struggled to fit in small lanes and parking lots due to its size. Both V-8 engines provide ample power and help the two-and-a-half-ton SUV move quickly but at the expense of fuel-efficiency. Additionally, in one review, we noted that compared to luxury offerings, GM’s full-size SUV’s were “not nearly as solid” with a “chassis that shakes and vibrates like a hobby horse.”
