What's New for F-150 in 2014

A new Special Edition version of the off-road Raptor features ruby-red paint, red leather upholstery, and special decals for the cargo box. Ford also launched a new performance street truck called the Tremor, which uses a twin-turbo V-6 engine. Sunset metallic paint is optional on the Raptor. HID headlights are now available on XLT and higher trim levels, rather than just the Limited. The FX Appearance package has a restyled grille, XLT and STX models gain 17-inch aluminum wheels with painted inserts, and special marina blue leather becomes available on Limited models. A new CNG prep package for the 3.7-liter V-6 engine makes it easier for fleet operators to switch to natural gas fuels...more

Vehicle Summary

The Ford F-150 has been America's best-selling truck for nearly four decades and the nation's most popular vehicle overall for thirty-one years. Cumulative sales of more than 32 million trucks attest to the F-150's broad appeal. It has dozens of varieties suited to every user: workers on a budget, off-road enthusiasts, those looking to tow, and s myriad of other demographics. Today's F-150 is better than ever, with a range of fuel-efficient engines, a long list of clever technologies, and refined interior appointments. Not that it has abandoned its roots: the F-150 can still tow, haul, and work with the best of them. Small wonder its sales reign has lasted so long.

Overview

There is a version of the Ford F-150 to suit every buyer. Models range from the barebones XL model all the way to the glamorous Limited. Engine choices start at the base 302-hp V-6 engine and go up to the 411-hp V-8. There are regular, SuperCab, and SuperCrew cabs. Buyers can select either a short or a long wheelbase. There are very few changes to the truck for 2013, in part because an all-new F-150 is expected for the 2015 model year. However, the current model is still an excellent choice and is one of our favorite full-size trucks.

All engines are mated to a six-speed automatic transmission, and both rear- and four-wheel drive are offered. One of the most popular engine choices is the 3.5-liter EcoBoost V-6, which produces 365 hp and 420 lb-ft of torque. That's enough to tow as much as 11,300 pounds (when properly equipped), yet the engine can also return up to 22 mpg on the highway, according to EPA estimates. The long list of upscale accoutrements includes high-quality leather, the MyFord Touch infotainment system, a backup camera, heated seats, trailer sway control, and HID headlights, although many of them require expensive trim levels or options packages.

Ford offers two versions of the F-150 that are aimed at enthusiasts. The first is the SVT Raptor, which features extra ground clearance, bigger tires, and a 6.2-liter V-8 engine for blasting over rough terrain. It's beefy and huge fun to drive, and its looks match its intended purpose thanks to exposed electric-blue Fox Racing shock absorbers, available mud-splash graphics, and tough seventeen-inch aluminum wheels. The second model is a new addition for 2014, the Tremor. Aimed at roadgoing sport truck enthusiasts, the Tremor packs Ford's twin-turbo EcoBoost V-6 engine and a short final-drive ratio for explosive acceleration. It is offered only as a short-wheelbase regular cab truck with rear-wheel drive; sporty touches include a floor shifter, special Tremor exterior graphics, twenty-inch wheels, and black badges with red lettering.
