The 2014 Cadillac ATS adds four new exterior colors, Intellibeam automatic high-beam control to the Driver Awareness and Driver Assist packages, frameless inside rearview mirror, a 110-volt power outlet on the rear of the central console for models equipped with CUE and Navigation package, and a larger-diameter leather-wrapped sport steering wheel on cars with paddle shifters. The 2014 Cadillac ATS is a compact luxury sports sedan slotting under the midsize CTS and sold in rear- or all-wheel-drive configurations.
The 2014 ATS is available with three engine choices: a 2.5-liter I-4 producing 202 hp and 191 lb-ft of torque, a turbocharged 2.0-liter I-4 making 272 hp and 260 lb-ft or a 3.6-liter V-6 with 321 hp and 275 lb-ft. All engines are mated to a six-speed automatic transmission as standard while a six-speed manual is available exclusively with the turbo-four. Performance is a 2014 ATS strong suit, making it “genuinely fun to drive and really satisfy to hustle.” It strikes an excellent balance between ride and handling that “makes it feel alive in your hands” while maintaining a ride that remains tolerable on bad roads.
Interior space is sufficient in the 2014 ATS but remains one of the least roomy compact luxury sport sedans on the market. Seating for four average-sized adults is acceptable but taller people will want to sit upfront due to the lack of head room in the rear seats due to the low roof line. Cargo capacity is decent for the class but remains on the small side with only 10.4 cubic feet of trunk space, which is expandable with the folding rear seats. Cadillac’s User Interface system (CUE) detracts from the interior’s daily usability due to complicated and fussy touch-sensitive controls on the center stack. Additionally, the system’s lack of responsiveness also distracts the driver since it “can’t be operated by feel.”
The 2014 Cadillac ATS has a five-star overall safety rating from the NHTSA (out of a possible five stars) but it hasn’t been crash tested by the IIHS.
