Vehicle Overview

The Buick Encore is the automaker’s small luxury crossover, which seats five and fits below the seven- to eight-passenger Enclave in the lineup.

The 2014 Buick Encore comes with a turbocharged 1.4-liter I-4 that makes 138 hp and 148 lb-ft of torque for an EPA-estimated 25/33 mpg city/highway. The turbo I-4 is connected to a six-speed automatic that powers the front wheels, but has the option of an all-wheel drive system that drops fuel economy to 23/30 mpg. The Encore also comes with Buick’s QuietTuning system that uses noise cancelling technology to give it a quiet ride, even at highway speeds.

The 2014 Buick Encore received four- and five-star overall safety ratings for the FWD and AWD versions, respectively, from the NHTSA (out of a possible five stars). In IIHS testing, the Encore earned a rating of good in four categories (good is the highest possible score), but received a rating of poor in the new and more difficult small overlap front test.

What We Think

The Buick Encore was a surprise success for the automaker, which managed to minimize the issues usually experienced by smaller crossovers. At ten inches shorter than the Ford Escape, you might expect it to feel cramped inside, but it’s not. Five adult passengers would be a squeeze, but four can fit comfortably. “With a simple suspension setup of struts in front and a torsion-beam axle in the rear, the Buick Encore nevertheless achieves a masterful balance between refined ride quality and taut body control, as if it had been developed in Germany, not Korea,” we said in a First Drive of a 2013 Encore. The front passenger seat folds flat, accommodating items up to eight feet long. We suggest that “if you can afford to sacrifice some interior space compared to a Ford Escape, the Encore will reward you with a more opulent interior and more convenience features for a similar price.”
