What's New for Q7 in 2014

The 2014 Audi Q7 sees only minor cosmetic tweaks for this model year. Xenon headlamps, complete with LED running-lamp accents, are now standard on all 2014 Audi Q7 trim levels, while the Premium Plus model now incorporates a power tilting/telescoping steering column and a passive entry/ignition system. If you opt for navigation on a Premium Plus model, a rearview camera and parking sensors are also included at no extra charge...

Vehicle Summary

Inspired by the Pikes Peak Quattro concept, the Q7 debuted in 2005, marking Audi's first foray into the world of "proper" SUV/crossover models. Although the segment is competitive, to say the least, Audi hasn't updated the Q7 line all that much since its introduction. Plans to add a twelve-cylinder diesel for 2008 fell through, but a 3.0-liter turbo-diesel six-cylinder was added in 2009.

Overview

The 2014 Audi Q7 is the largest SUV in Audi's lineup, but despite its size (and heft), it doesn't necessarily have that much cargo room within. Third-row occupants feel it the most, with only 29.2 inches of legroom and 35.4 inches of headroom. That's well behind the likes of the Mercedes-Benz GL-Class, which provides third-row stowaways with 35 inches of legroom and 38.9 inches of vertical space. Interestingly, the Q7 does somehow beat the massive Infiniti QX80, which offers only 28.8 inches and 36.8 inches, respectively, to those crammed into the third row. In terms of capacity, the Q7 tows more than the BMW X5 but not the GL or the QX, although all three models offer more total cargo volume than the Q7 with its rear two rows of seats folded flat.

No matter. Although it isn't necessarily the biggest, brawniest luxury SUV, that doesn't mean the Q7 isn't exquisitely dressed, both inside and out. Xenon headlamps are now standard across the board. The S-Line Plus package, available on both the Q7 Premium Plus and Prestige trim grades, blacks out exterior trim and wheels, lending the Q7 a menacing appearance. Sadly, that same package forces you to abandon two optional interior-decor schemes and adopt an all-black interior, accented with brushed aluminum trim.

On the plus side, the S-Line package also packs a little more power under the hood. S-Line-grade Q7s use a 3.0-liter supercharged V-6 with 333 hp on tap, which is 53 hp more than the base-spec Q7 3.0T has to offer. As good as that engine is, the Q7's "killer app" has to be the 3.0-liter turbo-diesel V-6 -- or as Audi calls it, the TDI. This engine packs a walloping 406 lb-ft of torque and allows the 2014 Audi Q7 to earn an EPA highway rating of 28 mpg -- 6 mpg better than a comparable 3.0T. Sadly, buyers can't mix the TDI with the S-Line package -- a pity, considering that the Q7's relative, the Porsche Cayenne Diesel, successfully mixes diesel thrift with a sportive character.
