The 2014 Acura TL is marking time until its expected redesign for 2015. The TL has been a solid product for Acura, but has not seen any significant changes in recent years -- its last major update was for 2009, and it had a mild refresh for 2012. Instead of wholesale changes, Acura has instead decided to fine-tune the TL, and although sales have declined somewhat, they remain relatively strong. In fact, throughout the first part of 2013, the TL was outselling the new ILX. The TL sits right at the heart of Acura's lineup, slotting in above the ILX and the TSX, but below the RLX. Expect the TL to be renamed the TLX and get a hybrid variant when the next generation debuts.
The 2014 Acura TL is essentially a carryover model from 2013. The model lineup is fairly simple. You can opt for front-wheel drive, which comes with a 3.5-liter V-6 engine rated at 280 hp and 254 lb-ft of torque. The all-wheel-drive setup, which Acura calls Super Handling All-Wheel Drive, teams with a 3.7-liter V-6 making 305 hp and 273 lb-ft of torque. Both engines are mated to a six-speed automatic transmission, although the AWD variant can be had with a six-speed manual. Standard features include upscale HID headlights; a moonroof; an eight-speaker, 276-watt audio system; and seventeen- or eighteen-inch wheels. The Technology Package adds leather, the AcuraLink suite of communications technologies, and an upgraded sound system, while the Advance Package includes heated and ventilated seats, blind-spot detection, and larger aluminum wheels.
The 2014 Acura TL exhibits very good driving dynamics. The torque-vectoring all-wheel-drive system works very well on the front-wheel-drive platform. The car happily rotates into sharp corners and remains planted at all times.
In recent years, Acuras caught some flak for their in-your-face design featuring a bold, beaklike grille that drew comparisons to a locomotive. The front-end design was toned down a bit for the '12 refresh, and the TL's front-end appearance now has a more standard appearance. The new fascias front and rear and the overall effect have made the car look lower and wider.
