Vehicle Overview

The Acura MDX is a three-row luxury crossover that fits above the smaller RDX in the automaker’s lineup. Acura claims the MDX is the best-selling three-row crossover of all time.

Summary

The 2015 Acura MDX is powered by a 3.5-liter V-6 that makes 290 hp and 267 lb-ft of torque, which pairs a six-speed automatic and the front wheels, or all-four, for an EPA-estimated 18-20/27-28 mpg city/highway. Idle stop technology helps to mitigate the fuel efficiency penalty for AWD over the more efficient FWD. Fore and aft second row adjustment helps the third row to accommodate regular-sized people, for short distances anyway.

Notable features on the 2015 MDX include the LED headlights, 8-inch multi-information display, lane keeping assist system (and lane departure warning), adaptive cruise control with low-speed follow, collision mitigation braking, one-touch walk-in power folding second row, and an ultra-wide DVD entertainment system for the rear of the vehicle.

The 2015 Acura MDX received a five-star overall safety rating from the NHTSA (out of a possible five stars), and is considered a 2014 Top Safety Pick+ by the IIHS.

What We Think

Almost as common as the Lexus RX, the bigger Acura MDX is comfortable (third row is cramped, but sliding the second row forward makes it livable for short trips), familiar, and composed. The engine and transmission are nicely matched, and the suspension doesn’t bounce excessively over potholes.

The only recurring complaint we had in our logs for a Four Seasons 2014 Acura MDX with AWD, besides the cramped third row and confusing two-screen infotainment/navigation system, was the crossover's forgettable nature. From an enthusiast’s point-of-view, the MDX is comfortable, with nice interior appointment, but it doesn’t make an impression nor does it inspire excitement. In our Driven Review of a 2014 Acura MDX we said, “If you're looking for the best expression of the smartness, practicality, efficiency and enjoyment that sets Honda’s prestige division apart from other luxury brands, the 2014 Acura MDX is the best car you can buy with an Acura badge.”
