Vehicle Overview

The Toyota Prius family is the automaker’s popular hatchback hybrid series of cars. The Prius V fits above the Yaris, but below the Corolla and Camry in the automaker's lineup, and sits above the subcompact Prius C and regular Prius in the Prius family.

Summary

The Prius V is powered by the same 1.8-liter I-4/electric motor combo as the standard Prius, which transfers its 134 net hp to the front wheels via a CVT. EPA-estimated economy in the larger Prius V is 44/40 mpg city/highway. Compared to the regular Prius, the Prius V grows an additional 6.1 inches: cargo room behind the rear seats increases from 21.6 to 34.3 cubic feet, and with both rear seats down the cargo capacity increases from 39.6 to 67.3 cubic feet.

The 2014 Toyota Prius V received a five-star overall safety rating from the NHTSA, and in IIHS testing received a ratings of good in four tests but poor in the new, more difficult, small front overlap test (good is the highest-possible rating).

What We Think

In an Editor’s Notebook review of a 2012 Toyota Prius V we said, “Anyone expecting the Prius V to be an all-new offering will likely walk away a bit disappointed, but those who love the existing Prius but long for a bit more passenger space - be it for older children, taxi fares, pets, or cargo - will find the V an appealing package.” One editor commented, “The interior is odd -- the fact that I had to look to the right to see any of the instruments is disconcerting. The gear-shift selector, particularly the Park button, is a feature that doesn't seem at all intuitive, but I suppose if you owned this vehicle you'd become accustomed to it in no time. The driving experience is perfectly adequate for non-enthusiasts.”
