The 4 Series is all new for 2014. BMW fans refer to this new-generation coupe by its code name: F40. The new coupe is longer, lower, and wider than its predecessor. It's also lower and wider than the sedan, and its styling is more differentiated from its four-door sibling than it was in previous generations. 4 Series is the new name for the coupe version of the BMW 3 Series sedan. BMW has now moved the coupe up one notch numerically to better separate it in consumers' minds from its four-door sibling. Mechanically, the 3 Series sedan and the 4 Series coupe are identical, although the 4 Series does not offer as many powertrain choices as the sedan. The 4 Series sticks to the two volume offerings: the 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder in the 428i and the 3.0-liter straight-six turbo in the 435i. Either is available with rear-wheel drive (sDrive) or four-wheel drive (xDrive). The 3 Series coupe has always been an enthusiast favorite, and the new 4 Series should be, too.
Although it's now called 4 Series, this is still the coupe (and, soon, the convertible) version of the BMW 3 Series. The familiar turbocharged four-cylinder in the 428i makes 241 hp and 258 lb-ft of torque; BMW still offers the choice of a six-speed manual transmission as well as the excellent eight-speed automatic. The 2.0-liter four is gutsy (ripping from 0 to 60 mph in 5.7 seconds) but it doesn't always sound great. It does, however, return good gas mileage: as much as 23 mpg city (with the automatic) and 34 mpg on the highway (with the manual).
The more potent performer is the 435i. Its classic BMW powerplant, a sweet-sounding turbocharged straight six, delivers 302 hp. It, too, is available with either a six-speed manual or an eight-speed automatic. Like the 428i, the 435i can be had in Luxury Line, Sport Line, or M Sport trim. These are mostly appearance packages, although the (rear-wheel-drive) Sport and M Sport include a firmer suspension, and the M Sport further adds high-performance brakes. The latter is also available as a standalone option. There's an optional adaptive M suspension, too, which automatically adapts to changing road conditions; it's bundled with variable sport steering in the dynamic handling package.
The ultimate expression of this BMW's sporty character has been the M3 coupe, which is currently on hiatus until the arrival of the M4 coupe in mid 2014. Details on the M4 are few right now, although the car is expected to abandon its normally aspirated V-8 in favor of a more potent version of the 435i's turbo six.
