We’ve waited quite some time for Acura to replace the aging RL with something more suited to the role of flagship sedan. The new 2014 RLX is that car. Apart from the distinctive LED headlamps and multispoke wheels, the RLX doesn’t break from Acura’s current design language, but it is slightly larger. A two-inch increase in wheelbase doesn’t sound like much but allows rear-seat legroom to eclipse that of the Mercedes-Benz E-class and Audi A6. Interior fit and finish is impressive, and the dashboard redesign—which groups many climate and audio controls into a touchscreen interface—is less cluttered than before. The RLX is powered by a 310-hp, direct-injection 3.5-liter V-6. Presently, that engine is only available in concert with a front-wheel-drive powertrain, which includes a six-speed automatic transmission. Ride quality is compliant but a bit sporty; the RLX’s svelte footprint and standard all-wheel steering render it surprisingly agile, although steering feel and feedback is a little wanting. Spirited drivers may want to wait for the forthcoming Sport Hybrid-AWD variant, which drives and distributes torque between the rear wheels by way of electric motors. We found early prototypes to be a hoot, but even the base front-wheel-drive RLX is a unique, well-rounded, and enjoyable entrant in the large luxury sedan segment.
Front, side, and side curtain air bags; ABS; traction and stability control; and a rearview camera are standard. Blind-spot detection is offered as part of the technology package. Collision mitigation braking system, lane keeping assist, and parking sensors are available as part of the advance package.
