Freshened front and rear styling gives the CC a bolder look at the expense of some elegance, but the CC remains a beautiful car that looks more expensive than it is. Practical buyers can finally add the CC to their shopping list, as Volkswagen has replaced the rear bucket seats with a three-person bench. The face-lift adds bixenon headlights and LED taillights to the CC’s standard equipment list.
The CC offers the sporty dynamics, exceptional interior, and premium feel that are Volkswagen hallmarks. The base engine is VW’s excellent turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder. Its refinement and power make it as good as the V-6s from many of its competitors, and it has better fuel economy. If you insist on a six-cylinder, Volkswagen offers a 280-hp VR6 that’s full of personality. A six-speed manual transmission is standard with the 2.0T; the optional six-speed automatic is a dual-clutch unit, meaning shifts are quicker and more direct. It’s a great gearbox, particularly in a sporty car, but comfort-minded buyers might be turned off by it. All-wheel drive and a torque-converter automatic transmission are standard with the more powerful six-cylinder. The sloping roofline makes the CC a four-door “coupe” in the vein of the Mercedes-Benz CLS and restricts rear-seat headroom. Volkswagen has caved to customer demand and added a third seat in back for the 2013 face-lift, but the car is barely large enough to hold a fifth person for more than a few miles. All CCs are equipped with a panoramic sunroof, split-folding rear seats, and a leather-wrapped steering wheel. With the Passat’s recent $7000 price cut, the CC might not appear to be the value that it actually is. We love it because it embodies the Volkswagen character that we cherish.
ABS; front, side, and side curtain air bags; tire-pressure monitoring; and traction and stability control are standard. Volkswagen’s Intelligent Crash Response System shuts off the fuel pump, unlocks the doors, and switches on the hazard warning lights after a serious accident.
