What's New for RAV4 in 2013

The 2013 Toyota RAV4 is all new. The sole gasoline engine is a 2.5-liter four-cylinder. It makes similar power compared with the previous base RAV4 but gets better fuel economy, as it’s now paired to a six-speed automatic rather than a four-speed...more

Overview

The RAV4 essentially created the mold for the modern compact crossover when it debuted in the late 1990s, but the all-new 2013 model clearly conforms to trends set by competitors. Specifically, the RAV4 no longer offers six-cylinder power, which has fallen out of fashion, and likewise loses its optional third-row seats. That’s something of a shame since those features made the RAV4 stand out in a crowded segment. On the other hand, the RAV4’s expressive new styling is far less likely to blend in. And the vehicle is still noticeably more spacious than many of its competitors, with cargo volume when the seats are folded that rivals some mid-size crossovers’. The sole gasoline engine is a 2.5-liter four-cylinder. It makes similar power compared with the previous base RAV4 but gets better fuel economy, as it’s now paired to a six-speed automatic rather than a four-speed. You’ll note that we specified “gas” engine; there is in fact another, altogether different, available powertrain: a 154-hp electric motor developed with Tesla. Available only in California, the RAV4 EV, which is actually based on the last-generation model, can travel more than 100 miles between charges and is rated at an mpg equivalent of 78/74 mpg.

Safety

Front, side, and side curtain air bags; ABS; traction and stability control; and a tire-pressure monitoring system are standard.
