What's New for Shelby GT500 in 2013

The Shelby GT500 was thoroughly revamped for 2013 with a larger, more powerful engine; an optional adaptive suspension; new styling that improves aerodynamic downforce; a toughened drivetrain; and a claimed 200-mph top speed...more

The most powerful Ford Mustang got a massive upgrade for 2013, with a new 5.8-liter supercharged V-8 that pumps out 662 hp and 631 lb-ft of torque. That not only makes it significantly stronger than the previous GT500 (up 112 hp and 121 lb-ft), but also allows Ford to claim the new engine as the world's most powerful production V-8. To tame that forward thrust, the GT500 also gets larger Brembo brakes, a stronger clutch and six-speed manual transmission, butch new bodywork that increases downforce at speed, and options like a limited-slip differential and adaptive suspension. All of that is important given that Ford claims the GT500 coupe can top 200 mph, making it the cheapest car on sale today that can hit that benchmark. And in our testing, the GT500 tore up a quarter-mile drag strip in just 11.78 seconds at 125 mph. Ultimately, though, the GT500 focuses more on all-out power than refinement. We find it trickier and less satisfying to drive than the 580-hp Chevrolet Camaro ZL1. The Ford's interior benefits from racy seats and other dress-up bits, yet it doesn't feel much more special than other Mustang cockpits. As for the Shelby GT500 convertible, the lack of body stiffness erodes confidence each time the car twists, flops, and cowl-shakes over bumps. Still, the Shelby GT500 is the one to have for the buyer who wants the loudest, fastest, most powerful factory Ford Mustang available. Find a straight road, apply pedal to metal, and hold on tight.

Front and side air bags; ABS; traction and stability control; tire-pressure monitors; integrated blind-spot mirrors; and the SOS Post-Crash Alert System are standard.
